Rethinking Enterprise Asset Management – The “eSAM Approach”

eSAM stands for EDI’s Strategic Asset Management (eSAM), which is much more than just a software solution. It is a comprehensive philosophy, program, and toolset for setting an organization on a path toward continuous improvement in Enterprise Asset Management Maximo (EAM).

The eSAM methodology is predicated on a crawl, walk, run approach to climbing the EAM pyramid (see graphic). An organization’s velocity up the pyramid is directly proportionate to its focus and commitment. A company can gain acceleration by focusing on specific areas (like specific craft groups or asset types) or prioritizing program activities over the day-to-day firefighting.

Understandably, the latter is not always an option. Most important is that the organization starts the journey, commits to following it, and develops a sustainable course and speed. EDI will help you chart this course and has a collection of solutions to accelerate it.

The eSAM Software Solution Set consists of a pre-configured version of IBM’s best of breed Maximo enterprise risk management software, EDI’s SuiteReq software, and a document library covering Standard Operating Procedures, Data Standards, and Training Materials. All of these elements are the client’s property for their unlimited use.

The eSAM Solution Set is built on IBM’s Maximo Enterprise Asset Management System. Maximo aggregates all asset data, including location, work and cost history, ownership, and accountability. Asset hierarchies enable costs to compound across systems, subsystems, sites, and organizations.Maximo’s sophisticated business architecture supports virtually all asset classes, distinguishing unique attributes and invoking proper business rules, workflow, and reporting requirements. The CMMS solution provides optimum flexibility, ensuring that as your needs or regulatory requirements change, Maximo supports these changes.Maximo includes solutions that address different needs throughout one’s enterprise: production departments that depend on asset availability and reliability to meet quotes and yields; and business managers, who need to increase revenues, achieve higher margins, make fully informed investment decisions, and define, manage, and monitor efforts to comply with regulatory requirements. You can use Maximo Asset Management products to help:
  • Support asset, work, and service management processes throughout the enterprise.
  • Plan and execute reliability-based maintenance activities, and track information on asset costs.
  • Maximize return on assets by reducing costs, increasing asset uptime, and focusing on asset maintenance and service delivery.
  • Facilitate the development of coordinated programs for preventive, predictive, routine, and unplanned maintenance advanced scheduling functionality that helps deploy personnel with the appropriate skills at the right time and for the right job.
  • Better monitor and manage efforts to comply with contractual obligations, service level agreements, internal corporate governance standards, and government regulations. Inventory, procurement, warranty, and vendor management functionalities can extend asset, work, and parts management and logistics to the supply chain.
EDI has developed a pre-configured Maximo system that can be deployed to fresh Maximo installs, as part of an upgrade, or directly into existing Maximo systems. The power of eSAM is that we at EDI have taken the leading industry practices and Maximo configurations and have packaged them together in an easily deployable product: EDI eSAM!This set of CMMS system configurations is ready to begin using on the day of installation and includes:
  • Objects/Screens
  • Workflows
  • Role-Based Security Groups
  • Start Centers
  • Reports and KPIs
  • Notifications and Escalations
  • Unique EDI Solutions:
    • Smart Number: EDI’s Smart Number feature addresses the traditional challenge of providing a descriptive ID that is helpful in system navigation, querying, and analytics without creating an administrative challenge for maintaining histories when the context or location of a system or asset changes.
    • Risk Prioritization Number: EDI’s Risk Priority Number (RPN) Solution allows Maximo to automatically assign an RPN to systems and assets that can be used in reports and planning activities to help start your Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) initiatives easily and without the heavy lifting generally needed for a complete RCM project. EDI RPN allows you to begin preventive maintenance activities on critical systems immediately.
    • Inspections Module: EDI’s Inspections Module provides a capability to define inspection plans and schedules, execute inspections to support condition and regulatory reporting, and drive condition-based maintenance.
Your Work Request solution should bring the power of Maximo to everyone in your company without requiring them to know anything about Maximo, or even what Maximo is. SuiteReq can capture and manage requests involving any Maximo Business Objects (MBO) such as Assets, Locations, Work Orders, Meters, Resources, Items, Tools, PRs, POs, and Invoices.SuiteReq is the Work Request tool that brings Maximo to the masses. As a wizard-designed web-based tool, SuiteReq allows your company to capture the most accurate workforce information and translate it to Maximo. Unlike other requestor tools, SuiteReq is designed with the non-Maximo user in mind. Requiring little to no training, SuiteReq is deployed rapidly and able to be configured as needed. As business drivers or processes evolve, you can make on-the-fly changes, like adding request categories and associated questions, in as little as 5 minutes.
With the eSAM platform, EDI delivers to the customer a set of draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that cover Life Cycle Asset Management and supporting processes. These SOPs:
  • Define Life Cycle Asset Management (LCAM)
  • Provide an organization-wide vision for EAM
  • State organization objectives related to EAM software
  • Defines and contextualizes specific procedures for the activities in the plan, build, and operate phase of asset management
These SOPs are provided in the draft Microsoft Word format so the customer can easily adjust them and add branding (like logos) before adopting them as their own documents.

With the eSAM platform, EDI delivers to the customer a library of draft Role-Based Training materials based on the provided SOPs and eSAM system configuration and processes. These training materials cover the “why” and “how” aspects of the Enterprise Asset Management program and procedures. The materials are organized by role to ensure they can be matched directly to the appropriate end-user.
